I know what it feels like to sit in a perfectly quiet room, inches away from the person you love, and feel entirely invisible. I know the heavy, hollow ache of screaming on the inside while walking on eggshells on the outside, praying they will just look up, just listen, and just understand.

My Beginning
Learning Through Heartbreak
The Experiences That Shaped My Path.
If we are sitting down for a cup of coffee, I need to tell you the absolute truth: I didn’t master the art of deeply moving communication in a university classroom. I mastered it in the trenches of my own heartbreak, failed communication, and survival.
The Turning Point
When Survival Was My Language
Understanding the patterns beneath the pain.
Long before I understood the science of a triggered nervous system, I was trapped in one. Like so many of us, I carried the quiet, heavy echo of childhood trauma into my adult life. When you grow up in an environment where emotional safety isn't guaranteed, your body learns a brilliant, exhausting defense mechanism. It goes into a permanent "survival mode." You learn to hover, to scan the room for conflict, to anticipate a crisis, and to build thick, protective armor around your heart.
When I got married the first time, I brought that entire armor with me. I thought I was communicating, but my frantic nervous system was just trying to survive. When things got tense, I didn't know how to speak from my heart—I only knew how to point fingers, fix, manage, or retreat into a protective silence. I spoke from a place of deep pain, and my partner’s nervous system registered it as an attack. His walls went up, my armor got heavier, and the result was a devastating, agonizing disconnection that eventually led to divorce.
Discover A New Path
Beyond Traditional Communication
Finding a deeper way to connect.
I remember looking in the mirror, entirely broken, and realizing traditional communication advice was failing me. "Just talking" doesn't work when two nervous systems are in a biological safety lockdown. When we are defensive, our ears literally close up. We stop listening to understand, and we start listening just to defend ourselves or launch a counter-attack.
That was my turning point. I had to merge my deep personal pain with my professional world. As an experienced and highly credible Speech-Language Pathologist, I knew the hard mechanics of speech, neurology, and human expression. But I had to look deeper. I realized that until we learn how to calm our own nervous system—and create a state of physical, cellular safety for the one we love—our words will always sound like a threat.
The Language Of Us
Where Real Healing Started
Learning to listen with intention.
I had to learn how to drop my own hidden judgments and interpretations so I could hear what my partner was actually saying, not just what my scared inner child thought they meant. I had to learn how to slow down, listen for true clarification, and respond with intention rather than reacting out of protection. I had to learn how to drop my own defensive armor before I could ever expect a partner to drop theirs.
And that is when the real healing began.
A Shared Mission
The Love That Changed Everything
Building a legacy of connection together.
Then came Jim.
Jim was my rock, my partner, and the person who showed me what happens when two people learn to speak and listen from a safely regulated heart. Together, we poured our lives into fighting for love. We became local chapter leaders for the United Marriage Encounter ministry, spending years volunteering, mentoring couples, and opening our arms to relationships on the brink of collapse. I became the person willing to stand in the gap, holding space for other people’s pain, and showing them how to lower the tension in their homes so their partners could finally lower their guard and listen.
Jim and I shared a beautiful, deeply connected marriage until he passed away. When I lost him, I made a sacred promise to carry on the legacy of what we built. I realized that my 40 years as an SLP, my childhood survival mode, my past heartbreak, and my years in marriage ministry weren't separate, broken chapters—they were the exact blueprint for The Language of Us.
